BEGINNING 2025

The Supervisor Certificate (endorsement) is required in the state of New Jersey for all supervisors of instruction and athletic directors who do not hold a standards principal’s endorsement.  A supervisor is defined as any school officer who is charged with authority and responsibility for the continuing direction and guidance of the work of instructional personnel.  The endorsement also authorizes appointment as an assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum and/or instruction (paraphrased from the NJDOE site).  Students who enroll in this program would be seeking to advance in their current role to become effective leaders in New Jersey (or elsewhere) K-12 schools.

Courses will include:

Supervision of Instruction– 56:300:600 (3 credits)
This course is intended to provide a foundation upon which aspiring school administrators, supervisors, curriculum facilitators can evaluate the effectiveness of teacher instruction at all grade levels and support the growth and development of teachers. The course examines models of effective instruction, the theoretical underpinnings of supervision, and best instructional practices that would inform effective instruction.(National Policy Board for Educational Administration Standards 1, 2, 4, 6, 10)
Leadership Dynamics – 56:300:601 (3 credits)
This course focuses on leadership traits, strategies and techniques used by administrators and supervisors to implement systems of observation and evaluation; introduces students to key theories about leadership of organizational change as theory applies to schools; and introduces students to key principles in standards-driven reform.(National Policy Board for Educational Administration Standards 4, 5, 6, 7, 9,10)
Curriculum Design and Development for Instructional Leaders - 56:300:602 (3 credits)
This course focuses on all concepts of the curriculum; introduces philosophy of curriculum development, principles and procedures, preparation, approaches, direct and indirect influences by analyzing and applying principles for designing curricula that focus on developing deep, flexible, and creative understanding. This course aims to construct a useful bridge between theory and practice.(National Policy Board for Educational Administration Standards 1, 3, 4, 7, 10)
Curriculum Evaluation - 56:300:603 (3 credits)
This course focuses on the evaluation of curriculum, programs, and their outcomes. Students will explore and evaluate the effectiveness of various curricula in ways that support students, families, and communities in an equitable manner. Participants in the course apply their emerging understanding to a project that applies course learning. (National Policy Board for Educational Administration Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8,10) 

The Learning Outcomes for the program include:

  • Students will learn the general principles of instructional staff supervision for grades PK-12.
  • Students will create, evaluate, and develop curriculum tools.
  • Students will explore how to supervise instructional staff and the development of curricula.
